The series’ sixth season kicked off with a promise that we’d see more Space Beth after her original introduction to the series in season four, and the newest episode of the series certainly delivers on that promise. The season was establishing a new situation for the Smith family, and fans are seeing it develop.
Rick and Morty Season 6 Episode 3 is titled “Bethic Twinstinct” and as the title suggests it was a very Beth focused episode where the two of the Beths figure out how to treat each other. This sparked a very emotional and physical rush between the two of them, and according to series writer Anne Lane, co-creator of the series Dan Harmon, and show maker Scott Marder in an in-episode special released by Adult Swim, it’s actually a psychological dive into how Beth’s character continues to evolve and love herself as a whole person. .
As episode writer Anne Lane explains, “Bethic Twinstinct” is an episode about Beth’s self-exploration and avoiding the rest of the family for it. After Lynn suggested the two be into each other, Harmon explained that it made sense as a narcissist, but that it also made sense on the deeper level of Beth’s learning to love herself as a person. It’s the kind of potential the team wanted to explore with Beth because she’s not only down to earth and aware of the limitations of her current life, but also like Rick has a very high opinion of herself.
It’s this breakup that Beth has experienced since season 3 of the series, and with this confrontation with her cloned head leading to the perfect romance, it’s more like Beth learning to love and accept all of these aspects of herself in the process. And how she keeps changing her relationship with Jerry in the meantime, it’s a healthier version of the marriage the two have had over the seasons thus far.
